 What does DVB-S mean?
DVB-T is the abbreviation for the English term „Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial“ and
names the terrestrial dissemination of television signals in the atmosphere. DVB-T is a variant
of Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) that is primarily used in various European countries and in
Australia as a standard for the transmission of digital television and radio via antenna.

 What does DVB-S mean?
DVB-S (Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite) is the variant of DVB for the transmission via
satellite.

 What does DVB-C mean?
DVB-T is the abbreviation for the English term „Digital Video Broadcasting - Cable“ and names
a variant of DVB that is used for the transmission of digital value-added services via cable
connection.

What is HDTV and what does HDTV mean?
"High Definition Television is a collective term that names a series of television standards that
are characterized by an increased vertical, horizontal and / or temporal resolution compared to
standard TV (Standard Definition, SDTV). At various times, due to the current state of technology,
other resolutions werde understood as high-resolution. Currently, vertical resolutions of 720
(frame) and 1080 lines (fields) are used. In comparison, the current television standards PAL
and SECAM offer 576 lines (50 Hz), NTSC 480 (60 Hz), each in the interlaced scanning.“

What is MPEG and what does MPEG mean?
The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is a group of experts, dealing with the standardization
of video compression and associated areas, such as audio data compression or container formats.
Colloquially, the term „MPEG“ is rarely used for the expert group, but for a specific MPEG standard.

What is AC3 and what does AC3 mean?
Dolby Digital (also ATSC A/52 and AC-3) is a multi-channel sound system of the company
Dolby which is used in the film technology (cinema), on laser discs, DVDs and in the television
technology. In the field of cinema and DVD, DTS and SDDS (SDDS only cinema) are direct
competitors. Dolby Digital supports up to six discrete channels and uses a psycho-acoustic,
lossy method for data compression.

 What is a transport stream?
A transport stream (TS, TP, and MPEG-TS) is the name for a standardized communication
protocol for the transmission of audio, video and data, it is specified in MPEG-2.
(see
explanation of the MPEG formats)

What is a S-Video connection and what can I used it for?
S-Video (also known as Separate Video, Y/C) names the separate transfer of brightness
(luminance) -and color (chroma) - information, with accordingly conducted cable and plug-in
connections. It allows for a qualitatively better signal than Composite Video, however it does
not reach the quality of RGB or other Component Video forms.

I want to learn something about the German television standards.
A television standard determines how the image and sound data are transferred from sender
to recipient during the transmission. The German TV standard is PAL and PAL B/G. The PAL
colorsystemnormally uses a video format with 625 lines per picture and has an image transfer
rate of 25 images per second. However, these are only transferred in fields, that means that
at first a picture with all the odd lines and then a picture with all the even lines will be
transferred, which results into a field frequency of 50 Hz, the so-called interlaced scanning.
Thus, at a low data rate of the TV signal, a flicker-free picture is resulting.

 What does H.264 mean?
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is a high-efficient standard for video compression. It was initially developed
by the ITU (Study Group 16, Video Coding Experts Group) under the name H.26L. In 2003, the
standard was adopted in identical wording in both organizations. The ITU-term is H.264. At
ISO / IEC MPEG, the standard is called MPEG-4/AVC. MPEG-4/AVC clearly differs from MPEG-4/
ASP and its derivatives Xvid and DivX. H.264 typically reaches approximately three times the
level of the encoding efficiency as H.262 (MPEG-2) and is also designed for high-resolution
images (e.g. HDTV). That means that comparable quality is reachable at approximately one
third of the MPEG-2 data amount. However, the calculation effort is also increased by the factor
2 to 3.

How do I carry out a driver update?
"Driver updates or driver installations are the most effective when they are made directly via
the device manager. When you are requested to enter an administrator password or a
confirmation, please type the password or confirmation.
1. Search in the device manager for the device that you want to update and then double-click
    the device name.
2. Click on the index tab „driver“ and then click on „update“.

You will find the device manager under: Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager.

How do I carry out a software update?
Please download the modified software under Software depending on your
TV card. After downloading, the folder needs to be depacketized. Now please insert your original
CD into your drive. Click on the downloaded folder and press the Setup button. The installation
routineautomatically checks whether a software version is already installed. If so, the present
version will be uninstalled. When the uninstall process has been finished, please click on the
Setup button fromyour downloaded folder again and follow the installation instructions. It is
always advisable to use the automatic process. For advanced users, a user-defined installation
is possible.

What shall I do if my card is defective?
 Please, look here .

 What does standby mode mean?

The standby mode is an energy-saving state. In standby mode, all open documents and
programswill be stored, and the computer is able to rapidly restart operations at full capacity
(usually within a few seconds) if you want to continue working. Putting the computer into
standbymode is like pressing the pause button on a DVD player: The computer immediately
stops all active operationsand is ready to continue the activities when the work shall be
continued. In order to put the computer into standby mode, please click on the power switch
in the Start menu.

Some computers can be put into standby mode by pressing a standby button or, when it comes
to a mobile PC, by closing the cover.
 Notes:
While the computer is in standby mode, the hardware control lights may be slowly flashing or
the color may change. For more information, please see the documentation that came with your
computeror visit the manufacturer's web site.
Your computer may automatically switch to standby mode after a certain period of inactivity.

Is there a standby mode unter Winows Vista and Windows 7?
Yes, here the name is "energy saving". Setting options can be found under:
Start/Control Panel/Power Options.

What is sleep-mode and what does sleep-mode mean?
In standby mode, the PC is kept running at full load which will lead to a high power consumption
after a certain period of time. In the energy-saving mode, only the most important components
will be „kept alive“ in the sleep-mode. This mode is the most efficient when you, for example,
wish to make a timer recording and want the spare power consumption as well as your PC.
Setting options can be found under: Start/Control Panel/Power Options.

How can I activate the sleep-mode under Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7?
Windows XP: Start/Control Panel/Power options. Now select the tab "sleep-mode", tick "sleep"
and confirm with "OK". Under Windows Vista and Windows 7, the following steps are needed:
Start/Control Panel/Power Options.
On the left side, choose the option "Select operation to happen when activating the power
switch ". Select the option „sleep-mode“ under the point "When pressing the power switch".

What is "Pay TV" and what does „Pay TV“ mean?
The reception of Pay TV (pay television) produces additional costs. (Irrespective of the GEZ
fees [GEZ = Central radio and televison toll collecting agency] usual in Germany). Against
money, the customer can receive one or more programs of a provider for the duration of his
subscriptionsor of the transmission ("on demand").
Besides few exceptions, pay-TV services are digitally broadcasted today. For decoding, the
digital decoder needs to support a conditional access system. This decodes the encrypted
television signals, usually by using a decoding card (smartcard).

What is a CAM and what do I need it for?

A Conditional Access Module (CAM) is a module that is inserted into a DVB receiver via a CI
slot. The task of this module is to manage the key exchange between smartcard and the
actual decoder hardware, which is working according to the Common Scrambling Algorithm (CSA).
The CSA serves the decoding of programs from Pay TV providers. For this, a key can be used
which is located on a
smartcard that is supplied to the users by its provider against a
non-recurring and / or monthly fee.
For this, the smartcard has to be inserted into the CAM to ensure that the electronics on the
CAM can access the smartcard.

What do I need a CI (Common Interface) for?
CI = Common Interface is an interface of DVB receivers. Meanwhile, there are many receivers
with a CI slot. These serve the insertion of CAMs. When it comes to TV cards, they need to be
installed as an optional module in the PC. Usually, a PCI slot or a 3.5-inch installation slot is
used.

I have bought a card at Hauppauge or Technisat, do you support those cards?
No, product liability as well as the support is the duty of the supplier or manufacturer of the
corresponding goods.

I have reception problems when is comes to programs such as Pro7, N24, Sat1 and Kabel1.
This problem is caused by so-called DECT phone systems. The transmissions are located on
the transponder with the frequency: 12480 MHz. If you divide this frequency by the
corresponding LOF (10600 Mhz), you get a frequency of 1880 Mhz. This corresponds to the
transmission range of these phone systems. It is helpful to either switch off the phone or at
least to move the base station.

I can hear a sound, but the screen is black.
This is caused by the so-called overlay mixer. Some old graphic cards do not support the
playback in the overlay mode, or the desktop resolution for using this technology is too high.

With a few programs, the tone sounds muffled, or it feels like Mickey Mouse is speaking.
With some programs it is normal to switch between mono and stereo mode during an ongoing
transmission. It is helpful to install a MPEG decoder to detect such change. This is only possible
with a 3rd party software such as DVBViewer. An optional acquired decoder is currently not usable
with the TT-Media Center.

After setting a program, the screen remains dark and I can only receive teletext and EPG!
This problem is caused by the lack of a MPEG decoder. Such  decoder comes with the driver CD
and needs to be installed for proper reception.

What does 4:2:0, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 scanning mean?
For YCbCr 4:2:0, the chroma resolution will be halved both horizontally and vertically. For
transmission and for domestic use, usually 4:2:0 will be used.
YCbCr 4:2:2 is a horizontal scanning of the color information (chroma) by the factor 2, thus, the
chroma resolution was horizontally halved. The 4:2:2 encoding corresponds to the "studio-quality"
for digital video and is used by a professional recording and editing hardware.
YCbCr 4:4:4 chroma resolution is identical to the luminance resolution.
